Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal 2016 is now open to entries

17th May 2016

The competition for the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal 2016 is now open to entries. This year’s competition is for pipe and harp.

Two prizes of €2500 will be awarded, one in each instrument category.

The competition was initiated by musician and presenter Peadar Ó Riada on his programme Cuireadh chun Ceoil because he felt that there was far too much emphasis on technique and ornamentation in traditional music competitions these days. In this competition judges deem character, spirit and musicality as being equally as important as technical proficiency.

To enter, musicians should record 5 pieces of music and upload them to www.cuireadhchunceoil.ie, or alternatively burn them to CD and send them to Peadar Ó Riada. Full details are on the website. Those intending to enter are advised to do so as soon as possible, rather than waiting for the closing date.

15 musicians will be shortlisted, and they will take part in a concert in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork in early 2017, where the winner will be chosen.
